“CO2 welding wire” is a market shorthand, not a complete product specification. A usable enquiry identifies the welding process, base-metal grade, exact shielding-gas composition, full wire classification, diameter, quantity, package and project documentation.

Short answer: Copy the process, base metal, gas percentages, full classification and diameter from the approved WPS or purchase specification. Do not infer alloy family from the word CO2.

MIG, MAG and CO2 are not interchangeable specifications

GMAW uses a continuously fed wire and external shielding gas. MIG refers to inert shielding, while MAG uses an active gas such as CO2 or an argon/CO2 mixture. The phrase “CO2 wire” commonly points to carbon-steel MAG wire, but does not identify alloy or classification.

Start with the alloy family

For carbon steel, classifications such as ER70S-6 may be considered with gases supported by the WPS and exact product data. Stainless steel requires the base-metal grades, joint type, corrosion service, full wire classification and specified gas blend. Aluminum should not be requested as CO2 wire; common GMAW practice uses inert shielding such as argon, subject to the procedure.

  2. Base-metal specification and grade.
  3. Shielding-gas components and percentages.
  4. Full wire classification and governing standard.
  5. Diameter and quantity by diameter.
  6. Spool, drum or rod package and net weight.
  7. Service and testing requirements.
  8. Datasheet, batch certificate and approval requirements.
  9. Total quantity and staged-delivery plan.
  10. Delivery location and required date.
